Debbie, you need to go to Mallorca. The beaches are much nicer, the crowd a bit older but very lively indeed.

I haven't been to Rimini but have been to Bellaria (close by). I didn't like the beach at all because they have wave breakers, causing the water along the beach to be brown and lifeless.

If the lack of waves doesn't bother you, then perhaps Rimini is really what you are looking for.

I have never seen a sarong sold in Italy, my dear, you may have to make do with a pashmina.

What about Ibiza?

Ibiza - the undisputed party champion of the world
If it's nightlife you're after, you've come to the right island. Ibiza has a hedonistic heritage stretching back more than 30 years. Top clubs, on form djs, hot bands, a cosmopolitan mix of clubbers, local residents, freaks, mature partygoers, fresh faces, a wide range of sexualities, and the full alphabet of celebrities - modern Ibiza contains multitudes.

It's in Spain, of course.

I'm just soooo afraid that you will find Italy too fuddy-duddy...

SeaUrchin: Yes I know they are called pashmina's in Italy, I was merely referencing Shelley's post. Heck, here in So Cal we merely refer to them as a bikini wrap or a coverup as well as a sarong....or whatever name happens to suit someone. In fact I have a lovely sari from India that would do fine as well.

LOL...I must admit that Lenox has a point. As a 28 year old, I could say that you, too, are an old fuddy duddy Debbie.

To be honest the comments didn't really bother me. I'm 28 and would personally much rather see sights than hang on a beach anyday, in Europe or anywhere else, but to each their own.

I tell you what:

Stay in So Cal!

And you really think you can use a five or six-yard sari as a beach wrap?
Or maybe "sari" is just another So Cal word that can mean anything...

Now Zerlina, don't go getting rude and tell me to stay in So Cal. These are the judgemental comments that are so unnecessary! Yes I know the sari is a bit longer (thought not all are 5-6 yards! but that allows me to also create a cute little sun dress out of it too.

I think a sari sarong multi yarded thingy as I call it may be too much for those lively beaches. Strut your stuff, girl.

Remember you have to give us a full report and even embellish it if you have to! Fuddy duddy's will love it, I am sure!

Sorry I am at work and haven’t had a chance to get back here. I need to pay for this trip

First let me say THANK YOU for all the positive responses!

Sea - The only insults I made were to the people I DIDN’T want responses from. The ones who are so narrow minded that they can’t imagine other reasons for travel besides their own, and have no trouble insulting you because you don’t travel for the same reasons as they do. I was just trying to ward off any unnecessary responses so I could actually get some people who are less judgmental and uppity to help me. I’m sorry if that offended you because I see your response to loves2sing was at least one that was helpful.

Sandy – Of course I was just joking about the old retired folks. I hope to be one myself someday! And by the way, seems loves2sing was looking for a bit of both art and “present” fun and she was trashed for it. I decided to not even suggest that I might actually see both… which I will, its Italy after all.

Ira – You are only a fuddy duddy if you act like one, but I’m guessing based on some of the other threads you’ve posted on, you were in a funk before you even read my post. Go whippersnappers!

Schuler – Thanks, I’ll check out Mallorca too.

I’ve been to both Greece and the French Riviera, and had a “rockin’ good time” there. We are going to see Venice and Rome and spend some time on the beach. A nearby island could work. We have 12 days and we’ll spend 4 days in each location. So it sounds like Mallorca, Rimini, Milano Marittima, or the Lido in Venice might be our best beach choices. I don’t really prefer big waves, but I do like clean water. Does one have prettier shores over the other? Does one have warmer water over the other? Any upscale hotel recommendations that are right in the thick of things?

I can not believe that no one has suggested the Emerald Coast in Sardinia! The more upscale the better? Definitely Porto Cervo. It's the place to see and be seen. Not only that, but you will most assuredly see some of the most beautiful beaches ever!

It's very expensive (cheap in the off season) and if you're thinking of August, you'll find it VERY difficult to find a vacancy.

If it's too expensive for your budget, then I'd agree with Rimini. Here's a fun webcam of Rimini. You can actually control it by zooming in or out and raising the camera up or down:

P.S. Cinque Terre will be WAY too quiet for you.

Last year, we spent 2 of our 12 days in Italy on the beach. We also saw lots of art, history, architecture. The beach was a nice break and it met a lot of your requirements.

It was close to restaurants and the town center, it had great access to the water, and we had quite a good time socializing with some other travelers.

It would be perfect for you.

Now, if only I could remember where it was... I am getting so old...

Oh, I'll just be quiet. As I told the other person looking for nightlife in Italy, my brother had an affair in Rimini.

I've been to a lot of beaches in Italy (not to any islands) and none of them seem to fit the things you ladies are asking for. That is why, I believe, the answers weren't to your liking. Your probably not going to find what you are looking for in Italy.

Aaaargh, I was editing my post when it somehow jumped on to the thread. Well, let me finish:

I want to go to a big shiny mall, with chain restaurants. Yes, I know Italy isn't known for its amazing malls, but I am going there and I want to know where the mall is, and if you guys tell me I'm wrong about going to Italy for a mall, then you are just a bunch of horribly negative old farts! So there! And if you suggest other places with malls, well, I'll tell you that I've already been to those places, and I want A MALL in Italy!

You anti-mall snobs. You think you're so much better than us? Well, I've been everywhere and I know there is a mall in every country in the world, and I order you to tell me where that damn mall is!

Oh I don't know tuscanlifeedit, I have liked some of the answers on here quite well. I just don't like the rude ones. And it seems when you get past all the disparaging remarks, there actually are some nice beach towns for us to visit. Nice to see you have time to go on about malls though...if I ever need one, I'll look you up.
