July and the summer months will have crowds in the Cinque Terre (primarily Americans, British, Australians) but no more so than any other place in Italy. The CT feels more crowded because the area is smaller in size and the people are milling about in a smaller space. However, there are 5 towns to choose from so you can go to the other towns (Monterosso, for example, is the largest of the towns with an expansive beach). Vernazza is the most crowded of the 5 towns, due to Rick Steves publicity, however, you will find Riomaggiore, Manarola, and the others charming as well.

thanks Huitres,

Crowds don't scare me, the way I look at it, it makes people-watching easier.
