Daytrips by train from London
I am staying with a friend in London who lives near the Tower Hill tube station. I would like to take one or two day trips via train outside of London. Any suggestions of what would be a good day trip and what website to use for booking the tickets in advance.
Thank you. |
We did a day trip to Hampton Court Palace. It was a fun day trip. I am sure there are loads of others as well that others can recommend.

Here's a few. What are your interest?
Bath Birmingham Brighton Bristol Cambridge Canterbury Cardiff Cotswolds (Moreton-in-Marsh) Dover Ely Hastings Kings Lynn Manchester Norwich Nottingham Oxford Portsmouth Rye Salisbury Southampton Stratford Warwick Winchester Windsor York Look here for departure stations, # of trains/hour, length of journey, prices, etc. Use the generic "London" for in the "From" box - as some of these can be reeached from multiple London train stations. http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/ |
Four that I have done that are not on Bardo's list are Peterborough, Rochester, St. Alban's and Kenilworth/Coventry.

There is a good book called "Daytrips London" by author Earl Steinbicker that offers 55 daytrips, in, and around London and Southern England from London. It tells you which transportation to take, gives you a walking itinerary once you are at your destination, etc. It gives very clear and concise directions regarding public transportation. I liked it because it gives a little history of each destination and this helped me choose which place to visit based on my interests. I'm using it again for my New Year's trip to London this year.
It included many if not all of the destinations listed by the previous posters. You could probably check it out from your local library to get some ideas for your day trips. |
It's technically still in London but you might enjoy Greenwich as a day trip. The cute town, famous observatory, maritime museum, etc. it's very enjoyable. You can take tube to Bank station and then Dockland Light Rail directly to Greenwich.
