Daytrip to Liechtenstein from Bodensee area?
 

We're going to be in the Bodensee area (probably Lindau) next summer, and thought a day trip to Liechtenstein would be fun. I heard the train doesn't stop there - we would have to go to Switzerland and take a bus to L. Has anyone done this? I wondered how long it would take and if it's a hassle. Would a car (which we would like to avoid) be much easier? I know practically nothing about L. and can't find much info in guidebooks. What would we want to not miss and could we do the trip in a day? Thanks, Adee

We visited Vaduz, Liechtenstein in 1997 and it was a rather dull experience. We drove in from Munich and paid a rather hefty toll just to get into Liechtenstein. From the main street there is quite a striking view of Vaduz Castle, up in a rock formation towering the main street, but we were told it is not open to the public. The drive in offers gorgeous views of the countryside and the German/Swiss Alps, but as far as walking around Vaduz and seeing the sights, well....there isn't a lot.

No reason to go there apart from to say that you've been! If you have no car, don't go out of your way to go there.

Maira,<BR>There is no separate toll as such to enter Liechtenstein. What you were probably charged was a vignette to use either Swiss or Austrian motorways, if you arrived on German Autobahn on your way to Liechtenstein.<BR>I agree with other posters about L. Not worth the effort to visit. There are other places on a daytrip from Lake Constance (Bodensee) which are more interesting, like St Gallen (Abbey and its library), S&auml;ntis mountain (fabulous view on a clear day from the top via cable car), and Feldkirch (medieval town wall). If you use ordinary roads (perfectly feasible), there's no need to pay for motorway tolls.

Folks - You do the Principality an injustice. If you are a stamp collector this is a must see sight. if you want a special paasport stamp this is a must do place. If you ski. Take a dayy off from the hectic tourist spots and go to Malbun (It's where Charles and Diana vacationed ((and Harry was concieved there)))

Jeff may have a point, but if you are like me and could care less about postage stamps and really don't care what anyone has stamped in your passport, then I'd say it isn't worth the trip. We went to say we'd been and spend two long days there. Nothing to do, nothing to see, and mediocre lodging and food. Probably the two most disappointing days I've ever spent in Europe. I always think I can turn lemons to lemonade, but this one really put me to the test. The lemons were still sour.

A dull, drab, round looking castle and a very high car toll are all that I remember of that place.<BR><BR>My advice...skip it...umless you just want to add it to your number of countries visited for braggin rights!<BR><BR>US
