How long does it take to get to Versallies - is everything walking distance to the train - would we prebook the train tickets??

I also enjoyed visiting Chenonceaux. TGV to Tours and then a smaller train to the chateau. Few trains to/from the small station per day though.

The RER to Versailles takes about 30 to 40 minutes, depending on which RER station is Paris is your departure point.

The Chateau is in walking distance from the train.

You do not pre-book this type of train: you can buy your tickets at the station where you board.

And for some a trip to Giverney and Monet's Garden/House is a great one, as is to nearby Auvers-sur-Oise, where Van Gogh, Cezanne and other Impressionists once hung out - Van Gogh died here - it's neat that copies of his pictures have been placed right at the spots where he painted them - like in the Cornfields where he painted crows, with a dark brooding sky - one of his last paintings before offing himself.
Giverny - train to Vernon then mini-bus to gardens. Giverny also the archtypical lost-in-time French village - elle et belle! If you're going to be in Paris 7 days you could do Versailles and a day trip - Chartres is my favorite - a sweet regional town with one of the world's most famous and sublime cathedrals. The Loire-Chenonceaux idea is also good.
