Daytrip from Naples
I would like to do Pompei and Capri. Is that doable. I will not have a car. Can I fit any other destination?
thanks |
Hi
In a day? No way. OK I haven't been to Capri but my preference would still be Pompeii. It's a spectacular site. Then if time permits visit the Naples Museum where alot of the artefacts are displayed (I missed this unfortunately). |
It's doable if you don't want to spend too much time at Pompei or Capri. Take a Circumvesuviana train from Napoli to Pompei Scavi (the earlier the better), then continue on the same line to Sorrento. Walk down to the harbour and get the next boat to Capri. Return on a direct boat from Capri to Napoli.

HI M,
You could spend a short time at both Pompei and Capri in one day, but I would choose on or the other. ((I)) |
Thanks for all the advice. If you can only pick one place which one?

Do you like chocolate or vanilla? ((I)) |
Pompeii is History, and Capri is Scenery. (And I intended the capital letters.) They are both spectactular places to visit, but it all depends on what you are looking to do on your day trip.
I agree with the others that you *could* do both in one day, but you will enjoy your day much more if you choose one and savor your time there. |
What is the rest of your trip like? We had a beautiful, relaxing, day in Capri. We went up, up, up the mountainside, and ended up taking a chair lift to the very top of the island. There was a relaxing lunch with pizza and wine along the way. The ferry was quiet and restful, and the beauty was unbeatable.
With Vesuvius in the background, we were walking through history during our day in Pompeii. My hubby and son are great fans of ancient history, so Pompeii was a highlight for them. It is also hot and dusty, and the amenities are not as nice as Capri but....it's Pompeii. A question for the experts. If someone really wanted to see Capri and ancient Roman history on the same day, would it be easier to see Herculaneum than Pompeii? Isn't it closer to Naples and smaller than Pompeii? Just a question. |
The answer to your quesetion is yes and yes, via the Circumvesuviana-aome people think Herculaneum is more interesting and better preserved than Pompeii-and it is certainly not as large, so not as overwhelming and far more manageable. But even Herculaneum and Capri could not be done in a day-I don't see that working at all.

Thanks for all the advice. I will look into Herculaneum. I would like to still do both. If not I guess we will decide when we get to Naples in about one short month!
