Daytrip from Florence to Siena and (?)
Would like to combine two towns in the same day from Florence.
Siena is one and could you suggest another town that would be convenient timewise from Siena. Thank you. |
Siena and San Gimignano combined are a very popular program for one-day coach tours - look at any TA or fliers in your hotel lobby, or in the big window of a tracel agency across from SMN station - coaches leave from that corner at around 8:30 daily, but book the day before.
It makes for a long day, but we had a great time with the guide that met our coach in Siena and was so good at explaining things, in three hours we learned and appreciated more than we would have done reading a book for days. S.G. is cute with its silly towers, not great but ok for a non-challenging late afternoon, then you snooze on the way back, getting into Florence in rush-hour traffic, but in time for dinner. |

Check out viator.com.
They have a one-day tour going to S.G. and Siena. They give miles for most FF programs too. |
The best option is to go from Florence to Siena in the morning, with no-stop SITA buses (leaving at 08:10, 09:10, 10:10...), trip time around 75 mins.
Spend your morning there, have your lunch in a trattoria such as the Taverna del Capitano near the Duomo. Then, go to San Gimignano by bus (trip time around 1 hour). Since there are no direct buses to Florence, and getting into Florence by bus on late afternoon might be tricky because of traffic, my suggestion is to leave San Gimignano by bus, but getting of at Poggibonsi (20 mins ride). The bus stop is just in front of the train station, so you can take the train to go back (leaving at 17:46, 18:46...) You'll reach Florence in about 1 hour. |

We actually preferred to spend our nights in Siena rather than Florence.
You're really missing something if you only see Siena during the day time. |
