Day visit to Starnberger See (beach for swimming?)

We would like to take the train to Starnberger See for a bit of day trip. We were there once before, off season, for a stroll and thought it would be nice to go back and take a boat ride along the lake. My Top 10 Munich guidebook says there is swimming at the beach. Can anyone tell me where this might be? Are there facilities for changing? Any other information on the area that would be helpful?

Thanks so much!

Only the introductory site is in english:

This site (only in german) lists the various bathing beach sites (Badeplaetze):

Perhaps you can google translate it for more specific info. Looks like Percha beach offers a lot of amenities...

Looks like the S-bahn Line 6 has stops in Starnberg, Feldafing, Possenhofen and Tutzing....

There are several spots to swim, as you can see in mokka's last link. Maybe less than you might expect, but a great part of lakefront are private properties.

If you take the S-Bahn and want to keep the walk within reasonable limits, the beaches at Starnberg, Possenhofen and Tutzing are those you can reach.

Starnberg is the shortest walk, and the usually most crowded place.
Tutzing I don't know too well, but the walk to the lake from the station is around 15-20mins.
The nicest setting of all has Possenhofen. It's the park of the old "Sisi" palace (now private residence) with several spots to hit the lake.

Starnberg and Tutzing have a "Strandbad" or "Seebad" which designates a public beach where you pay an entrance fee and have facilities to change, toilets, snack bars, deck chairs etc.
A "Badeplatz" or "Badesteg" is usually just that.. a smaller beach or a short pier where you can hit the water. You pay no fees, but usually also have no facilities. Or they are somewhere nearby, as in Possenhofen park, where you have public toilets in the park. People would not bother to use those to change to have a swim, though.
As you usually carry a larger blanket or towel with you anyway, this would be the usual "changing facility" for those using the free beaches w/o facilities.

Possenhofen is also a nice spot to visit not only because of the nice big quiet park along the lake but also because of the passenger ferry to the Rose Island from Feldafing park..

If you don't feel like walking back to Possenhofen S-Bahn or walk uphill to Feldafing S-Bahn station, you can take one of the frequent boats back to Starnberg. Where the pier is right next to the S-Bahn station.

The other beaches are either harder to get to without a car, or require a change to a boat or bus at some point.

Schloss Berg (beach) is only interesting for those who wish to make an end to it all in royal company.. mad King Ludwig took his last swim here..

Mokka4 and cowboy, thank you so much for the information!! Very helpful for us.

You are having such high temperatures at the moment ( I notice, as a result, train disruptions posted on my weather notification).

Thanks, again!
