day trips out of Vienna

Any suggestions on day trip out of Vienna?

I know I've mentioned this on previous posts (you might try to do a search) but Krems and Durnstein in the Wachau Valley make a great day trip from Vienna. I especially like Durnstein, a pretty little town with a nice hotel, the Richard the Lionhearted, where you can sit outside (weather permitting) and have lunch perched above the Donau. Mariazell is also a great day trip about 2 hours or so from Vienna, with beautiful scenery on the way. You can do a search on google.com and find several websites on Mariazell.

I would add the abbey at Melk, the Danube valley between Vienna and Linz, Korneuburg and Klosternueberg just north of Vienna, and Baden and Eisenstadt south of Vienna. There are so many nice little villages all around Vienna, it's hard to go wrong no matter where you go, especially if you travel by car.

Go to the Tourist info in Vienna and get info on the hovercraft trips on the Danube. The best were to Bratislava and Budapest!

Just remember that you will probably need a visa for Budapest. When I lived in Vienna, I did the Bratislava hydrafoil trip. It was a big yawner. IMHO, there is nothing pretty about Bratislava. I think there are prettier places to see in Austria.

Krems is nice and the towns have cafes with new wine. Also, around the Vienna Woods.<BR>Budapest is worth more than a daytrip and, if you are from the US, you will not need a VISA. Bratislava is a nice little town but a daytrip would be all you need.
