Day Trips from Zurich and Ventimiglia

I'm looking for some good day trijps from Zurich and Ventimiglia, Italy. Would Cinque Terre be too far for a day trip? What about Germany or Austria from Zurich? Thanks! Jennifer

From Zurich you can always go over to the Bodensee - Konstanz is about 2 hours by train if memory serves and is a lovely city with tons of stuff to do/see. Meersburg is right across the lake with the oldest castle in Europe and Lindau is also right there, although it is not one of my favorite cities. I do know for a fact though that you can do it in a day because when I was a student there, I went from Konstanz to Zurich, got a passport, looked around, had lunch and made it home in time to go out that night....Also the Swiss side of Konstanz is Kreuzlingin (since the train stations are the same and you can walk from one country to the other there is no reason to get a ticket to Konstanz if Kreuzlingen is cheaper.).

Colmar in Alsace, France. About 1.5 driving hours from Zurich. Pretty Alsation villages abound around Colmar (even Colmar, itself is pretty!).

Jennifer: From Zurich, you can do a lot of different day trips. A lot of Swiss cities such as Lucerne, Berne, Basel can be reached in an hour or so.
What are you interested in: Mountains, museums, lakes, shopping ..... ?? The Bodensee area is nice, esp. the trip from Romanshorn to Friedrichshafen by boat (visit the Zeppelin museum).
What about the medieval town Stein am Rhein or the Rhine Falls?
You can also go to Bregenz (Austria) in one day.
For further inputs, check out:
www.zurichtourism.ch
www.myswitzerland.com

From Ventimiglia you could easily go to Menton or Monte Carlo on the Côte d'Azur.

Thanks to everyone who responded . It seems like there are some great sidetrips from Zurich and into France. The train ride to Cinque Terre seems to be about 5 hours. Does anyone know how much quicker driving would be? I would really like to make it there. We'll be in Ventimiglia for 6 days. Maybe we should spend a couple of those days further into Italy? Darn! I just hate to pack up and move again!
