Day trips from Venice?

My son and I will have an "extra" day in Venice. By that time, we will already have toured Tuscany and Florence. Any suggestions for day trips from Venice via train/bus/tour? A previous post asked about a day trip to the Dolomites with Avventure Bellissime Tours which sounded great, but it received no responses. Thanks.

Lina,

Padua and Verona come to mind. Both can be easily reached by train from Venice.

I'm not sure what you mean by an "extra" day in Venice though...

Hope this helps,
Andre

Hi Lina,

Are you staying longer than 4 days in Venice? If not you won't need to go outside the city.

Lina - I've never used Avventure Bellissime, - but you can certainly do a day-trip into the Dolomites by public transport or by organised tour.

If you go by public transport, aim for Cortina or San Martino di Castrozza.

There is a Venice-Cortina bus from Piazzale Roma, or alternatively you can go by train from Venice to Calalzo, from where there is a connecting bus service up to Cortina.

Let me know if I can be of more help ...

You might want to use the extra day for Murano, Burano, Torcello. Or a Brenta Canal trip to see Palladian villas.

www.boglewood.com/palladio/map.html
for map and list of Palladian villas on the Brenta Canal.

There is a Brenta Canal boat that leaves from Venice and that stops at several of the villas.
tour boats: www.deltatour.it website gives rates but not a schedule

also www.antoniana.it/individuali-i.html lots of detailed information

I'm also not sure what an 'extra day' means. How long will you be in Venice Lina? We were there for 10 days and only managed to find time to visit Torcello! I'd suggest Torcello as a fabulous trip to do from Venice. It gives you a real sense of how Venice began and how it fits within the lagoon

Hi Lina,

My husband and I spent a wonderful on the island of Burano. If it is not already included in your itinerary, I recommend putting it in. It is a charming island that we spent the day walking around, in wonder of the colours of the buildings there. We also walked across a bridge towards a large bell tower, and found ourselves in a lovely little walled park where we sat in the sun watching children play and boats pass by through the iron gates. It was a great chance to get away from the hustle and bustle! I can't do it justice talking about it - you have to see it, or at least the photos! I wish I had them on my website, but haven't got that far yet...

But remember, it's better to catch a fast train, EC, IC or Eurostar.

An Intercity to Padova? It's just a 30 minutes ride, most Eurostars don't even stop in Padova, Intercities just cost you more. For such a short trip, a plain Regionale train is the best solution!!!

My Heavens, Ira and MaryK, I can't imagine you don't know the meaning of the word "extra." Or are you confusing this with "obviously this is somebody who just doesn't realize that it takes forever to really do Venice right"????
Some people are just able to absorb things faster than others..or perhaps they didn't find all those tight-panted gondoliers as fascinating as you two did...

ira Jun 30th, 2003 04:24 AM

Dear Aunt Fanny,

No, it's not the gondoliers.

I just can't imagine the idea of an 'extra' day in Venice being anything other than a chance to see more of Venice.
