Day Trips from Strasbourg
We'll be spending four days in Strasbourg and are interested in fun, relatively inexpensive day trip locales--in France or Germany--that can be reached with public transportation/trains. Thank you!

been there done that.
we day tripped to nearby Colmar (45 mins by train) - a cutesy town and wine center - half-timbered houses, canals, flower-bedecked buildings and historic sites to tour. And a replica of the Statue of Liberty to oogle - the sculptor i guess was from Colmar. And Baden-Baden in Germany - about an hour by train with one change - easy to do. One of Europe'smost venerable spas - royals from all over gathered here in past days - still vibrant spa and neat town to. Vast park-like setting. Tour the ornate main Casino (only until about 11am each day however) to see what a Victorian watering hole for the wealthy and famous looks like. |
You could go to Triberg, home of the worlds largest cuckoo clock, in the Black Forest. Try the gateau, buy a cuckoo clock, enjoy the scenery. Takes about 2 hours on the train from Strasbourg.

Colmar is adorable, Cute old town, great museums, nice restauarnts. Also - many of the small towns on the wine road between Colmar and Strasbourg (but don;t know about public transit - we almost always do road trips).

We rented bikes in Strasbourg and road across the bridge to Germany, very easy and very scenic, a great area to go around on a bike.
|
Freiburg. One train change at Offenburg.
Colmar, of course, is a must. If you're into art, don't miss the Museum Unterlinden with Grünewald's Isenheimer Altar. |
We did one day trip down the Wine Road by a small group ( ie 2 others plus three of us )in a van with driver organised through the Strasbourg Tourist Office. Another day we went by train to Colmar. Both days were great.

Obernai is only 40 minutes away by commuter train. It would be difficult for a village to be more picturesque. Of course, it is overrun by Germans on the weekend and it becomes necessary to make reservations at the restaurants then.
