Day Trips from Rome

We'll be in Rome for 5 days.

Are there any Day trips that you would recommend?

Would you recommend an overnight trip (e.g. 3 days in Rome 2 days in Capri)?

We're staying at the Hotel Aberdeen. Any opinions?
Thanks...

Don't know the hotel. Day trips would include Tivoli (Villa D'Este and gardens; Hadrian's Villa), Ostia Antica (a large Roman city). You could take an ES train to Florence. Not much time to see such a wonderful city, but it can be done. Even a trip south to Pompeii is possible, but a very long day.

You could also visit Orvieto, which I've not been to, but I've heard it's worth a trip. I think the train from Rome is about an hour and a half.

It will take you about four hours ( and that's without traffic, delays, etc.) to get from Rome to Capri. That's why I'd recommend at least three nights there. I think it's an awful lot of travel back and forth for just two days.

Good luck, and have fun!

I second the Villa D'este recommendation. There is a bus that leaves from the Battastini Metro stop. The trip takes an hour or so. Also, there is a direct train to the little coastal town of Nettuno, where the US WWII cemetary is located (awesome), as well as a fine restaurant, recommended b in the Fred Plotkin book.

Or you can go to Assisi, ..with the ES is a little more than 90 minutes...
