Day trips from Riomaggiore
 

What areas can be explored from Riomaggiore? Florence? Tuscany? Venice?

Are you serious?
Why locate at a remote fishing village as a base for day trips. No, those places are not convenient. It is good for Pisa and the rest of the Ligurian coast. I assume you have a map.

Riomaggiore is not exactly the best location to day trip from. It's about a 3 hour train ride to Florence, 6-7 hours to Venice, and about 4 hours to Siena. I would suggest exploring the CT from Riomaggiore, and also Santa Margherita Ligure and Portofino, then relocating to maybe Florence or Tuscany for a few days. You would spend a LOT of valuable time on the trains to and from these day trips.

You are right in the midst of Cinque Terre, enjoy the immediate area of the 5 lands and surrounding towns such as Portovenere, Lerici etc.

You may take a train ride up to Santa Margherita Ligure, Portofino, Rapallo and Camogli.

You can go to Genoa by train from Riomaggiore should you get a rainy day or decide Riomaggiore isn't all you expected.

I've never been to La Spezia, but hope to sometime soon, because it is an historic town and I have heard that it has valuable artwork.

If you are really tired of being in one of the world's most scenic attractions, then you can take a boat ride to Portvenere, great sea-food as well as La Spezia which does have some attractions. and a train ride to Santa Magherita and Genoa is definetely do-able, plus I suppose you could also go to either Lucca or Pisa and back in one day.

I see no reason to be so snotty about this question. When I arrived at the Cinque Terre, I immediately didn't want to spend an extended amount of time there. It was crowded and touristy. For the reasons I like to travel, I think there are far nicer destinationa in Liguria in any number of respects.

Before basing themselves in the famous Cinque Terre, people are not wrong to ask what else they can see in the area.

I agree with everybody that Riomaggiore and surrounding towns themselves are wonderful to explore by feet for days or weeks .

Carrera is not too far by car. You can explore the mountain of marbles from which stones are still quarried. The town is a nice lunch stop.

It really wasn't asked what could be seen in the area. I don't consider Venice in the "area" of Riomaggiore.

I noticed that too, but that's not the way people answered.

Instead of checking in and out...we like to have a home base somewhere we know we would love then venture off overnight if the mood strikes. A long train ride through the countryside for one day would not bother us as we live on an island and being anywhere is exciting.

We did the reverse-- stayed in Santa Margherita Ligure and took the train to the Cinque Terre. So you could easily see SML, which is a very nice mid-sized town. You could also venture up to Portofino by boat from SML. Have fun!
