Day trips from Prague?
 

What are some recommendations for day trips from Prague? I will have 12 days in Prague (just my brother and I). We are staying with an American friend there, but she has no car.
I would love to see as much as we can while there!
Thanks to all for the help on the Auschwitz post! I do think we will see Terezin as an alternative.

Are you interested in castles? If so, Orlik and Zvikov are untouristy and atmospheric. I would also suggest north in the Cesky Raj region.

12 days in Prague is quite a long stay and the Czech Republic is such an intrestiung varied place. It might be worth splitting your stay with say 6 days in Prague you could still fit in a couple of day trips. Then a take a train to another part for the second week.

I would suggets moving Brno it is a lovely place, for the second week as it is a hub of their train system. I have stayed in Brno for a few days it is a nice place nice has a nice outdoor markt in one of the squares, plenty of resturants lovely buildinfgs quite a lot to see, and as it is the second bigesst city in the Czech republic food and drink is much chaeper than Prague.
You could do a few day trips from here with no hassle.

There is so much more to the Czech republic than Prague, as much as I like it. I have been to Prague several times over the years and it is becoming more and more touristy. Don't get me wrong Prague is a very beautiful place and it is some where you have to see, but if you have more that a week to stay in the Czech republic you really should try and stay in another part.
There are many pretty little towns and plenty of senic places to see.

Definitely go Cesky Krumlov. It is a Unesco world Heritage Site and quite lovely. The castle is amazing and do not miss the unique Baroque Theater. You must make advance reservations to see the theater. Google the town and you will see what i mean.

Agree with CK but I believe you need an evening or early morning there to truly appreciate how quiet it can be without the crowds. An overnight would be better in my opinion. :)

Kutna Hora is also an interesting place to explore.

We went to CK four years ago last September. Just drove in, asked around for a B&B, next morning went to castle, inquired about a tour. Brunhilda, our tour guide, had rudimentary English skills, but knew her stuff. Did NOT need advance reservations to see the theater; have things changed in so short a time? Or is other party wrong?

As mentioned Cesky Krumlov is lovely. I would seriously consider coughing up the money to spend one night there to really appreciate it. It is a very long day trip from Prague. Another place we enjoyed very much was Karlovy Vary and is an easy day trip from Prague.

Great suggestions for day trips! Besides Kunta Hora, we're also planning a day trip to Dresden Germany later this year. ENJOY!

I would also suggest Terezin as a day trip, especially if you have not been to any of the "major" concentration camp sites. The Small Fortress is very well done and a fascinating tour, as is the Ghetto Museum, the crematorium, and the Administration building.
