My vote is for Vaux le Vicomte. It was designed and engineered by the same 3 men who later were requested [sic] by Louis XIV to create Versailles. The architectuaral innovations of the building are marvellous and the interior decorating and painting is of the highest order. No wonder techy Louis had a fit when he saw it and demanded even better for himself.
Much of the bulding has been restored with some beautiful furniture.

One of the tour companies has a tour that goes to both Vaux and Fontainebleau in one day. A little much, perhaps, but certainly a day full of interest and big lessons in French history.
I would dearly love to return to both Vaux le Vimcomte and Fontainebleau.
