Day trips from Nice France.

We will be staying in Nice for four days. Just like to know if there are any neat day trips we can take by train. I know that Italy
is close by, any cities or towns in Italy that can be reached for a day trip. Plus any
other side trips that you can think of.

Get a bus to St. Paul, but go either very early or late in the afternoon. It's a preserved walled hill town that's crawling with tourists even during the off season. Still worth seeing, nearly the whole town has become an artist's studio and gallery. If you are going in the summer, try a boat trip down to St. Tropez. Also, Isle Saint Marguerite, off Cannes is wonderful and charming.

Nice is very close to Monaco/Monte Carlo which is worth a visit.
By train to Ventimiglia (Italy) must be possible, even to San Remo. Especially San Remo is a real shopping paradise with the most beautiful quality of leather (shoes, bags, etc.)
When in Nice last year,I recall one of our most pleasant day trips by train was the one to Menton,France. It is a charming town, rght on the Italian border,a bit off the beaten tourist path, but nevertheless a delightful spot for strolling, eating under an umbrella on the beach with dozens of restaurants nearby if you wish. A visit to "The Lemon Capital" should not be missed. Have you been there?

Try taking a morning train from Nice just across the Italian border to Bordighera. The scenery is wonderful, as the train travels mostly right along the Mediterranean. We changed trains in Ventimiglia, with about a half hour layover there, and were lucky enough to find a flea market going on. In Bordighera, take a beautiful walk down a beach boardwalk to La Reserve Restaurant, where you can have a wonderful lunch on a deck overlooking the sea. In October, there were practically no tourists (We, of course, were "travelers" not "tourists!")there. On the way back to Nice, we stopped off at Monaco for a while. This was a really wonderful day trip for us.

If you can do the bus from the center of Nice, I'd very highly recommend:

Eze Village
Vence and St. Paul de Vence
Cap. St. Jean Ferrat to see the magnficent Rothschild Estate.

The bus was very clean, on time, delightful scenery, runs frequently and is cheap. At first I was disappointed that you could not go to these places by train but the bus truly worked out fine!
Ellen
The previous comments already pick up the highlights. I will add Antibes, which has a Picasso museum in the old Grimaldi chateau. Eze, already mentioned, is a very pristine old town worth visiting and, whether its San Remo, Bordighiera or Ventimiglia, the trip across the border into Italy is fun, especially if you're not otherwise visiting Italy during your trip.
Also pottery is made in Vallauris, some with Picasso designs, which can easily be combined with a trip to St. Paul de Vence.

Ramzi-we did the Nice trip last year and I agree with the above postings. However, its worth a trip on the bus to stop in Monaco and visit the Oceanographic museum that Jacques Cousteau contributed to. It was started by Prince Ranier's grandfather back when it was in vogue to start museums and get marvelous specimems etc. It is a huge aquarium with fabulous views from its rooftop along with a restaurant that makes you wish you owned a villa on the water.Cousteau did research there and the original iron lungs and sub are there-even if you are not a water geek you would enjoy the beauty and splendor of it. Menton is defintely worth a stop off the train and if you want to be touristy-go over to Cannes on the train to see how the other half lives with money and the film festival. Be sure to go to Tavern Massena on the main shopping street for the best lasagna and wood oven cooked pizza you will ever taste.Ah.......Debbie
