Day trips from Munich airport

I'll be in Munich for several hours on Sunday, the 15th, and am considering going to Dachau and/or to Therme Erding. I arrive at MUC at 8AM and going on to Poland on a 7:30 PM flight.

I'll be returning on the 22nd, another Sunday, around 1PM and staying overnight at the Sheraton by MUC airport.

Is there any public transportation that I could take from Munich to Dachau directly or would I have to go into the city and back out?

I might get a car on either or both days, especially on the 15th since I will have luggage. If I had a car, would it be reasonable to visit both places? Arrive at 8AM, be in the car by 10AM, be at Dachau at 11AM and leave at 2PM, get to Erdingen by 3PM and leave at 5PM, getting to the airport by 5:30PM for a 7:30PM flight.

The Sheraton is only 5 miles from Therme Erding, so I assume that the taxi fare would not be totally outrageous.

Here is a map of the Munich Metro system:

Just above the map is a link to the "Munich Transport and Tariff Association" where you can check schedules to Dachau. It takes about 1 hour to Dachau from the Airport by SBahn and costs 10 euros for an all day ticket to take one person there and back.

You may be able to store your luggage at the airport.

Regards, Gary

Thanks Gary, that helps. I see the route. Also I see that Erding is out at the end of the S2 line.

I assumed that there wouldn't be luggage storage at MUC but I will have to research that tonight.

I was considering going to the Sheraton and leaving it there for the day, even though I wasn't staying for the night.

Here is a link to services at the Munich Airport. Look under "Left Luggage Office".

According to the MVV, the fastest way from the airport to Dachau is to go by S-bahn with a change in Laim. The S-1 will be heading for Munich when it arrives at Laim, and you will have to catch an outgoing S-2 headed for Petershausen. This will necessitate a change of platforms from 2 to 1.

The elevator is situated about 20 meters before you reach the stairs on your right hand. You'll only need to go down one floor, then turn left and right again. If you see "Müller Bread", you're headed the wrong direction. ;-)

Logos,

I need your advice. Go to the posting on "do we need power converter?"

I have seen information that says the non-grounding Europlug is only for applications that draw less than 2 1/2 amps; anything higher requires a grounding plug. Doesn't that mean that a hair straightener, which draws far more, should have a grounding plug for whatever country one is in?

This is great info thanks. It's great to know that I can leave my luggage at the airport.

I just have to decide whether or not to take my laptop. The safe deposit boxes at MUC are too small. I might carry it in a backpack as it is only about 2 kilos. Could store it in a locker at Therme Erding.

I see that the S2 goes out to Erding and there is a bus from the station to Therme Erding. Their website says that the place is "within sight" of the airport.

I see that I can take the S8 and connect to the S2 but that looks like a circuitous route if Erding really is that close to the airport. Looks like a taxi would be much quicker.

I see Daglfing on the map. I was there once to see the trotters race.

Again, according to the MVV website (www.mvv-muenchen.de), you can get to the Erding Therme by taking Regional bus 512 from the airport to the Erding S-bahnhof and Regioanal bus 560 from there to the Therme. That will cost €4,40 one way (2 zones); you can buy an outer zone day ticket (Außerraum Tageskarte) for €5, which will cover the round trip. The trip takes about 30 minutes from the airport to Erding, a few minutes to connect, and 20 minutes to the Therme, about 55 minutes overall. I don't know how long the taxi takes or how much they charge, but compare it to 55 min. and €5.

About the Erding Therme, you are probably already aware of this, but all of the Thermen I have ever been in have had an open side, with a large cool pool full of screaming kids, and a side with all of the hot stuff (saunas, steambaths, etc). In the sauna and steambaths the dress code is always what the Germans call "textilefrei". That is, the dress code is "undressed". From what I can see on the website, this is the case for the Erding Therme. The Germans accept this matter-of-factly, but it can be somewhat of a cultural shock for Americans. Just wanted to make sure you understand this.

Thanks for the bus info Larry, I will use it. There won't be any culture shock for me.

It was a gorgeous spring day in Munich this past Sunday. The S2 arrived at the airport station 2 minutes after I did. The transfer at Laim was 3 minutes. Bus to the concentraion camp was at the station when I arrived. Got the bus back to the station after a 7 minute wait. 9 minutes to wait for the train to Laim, 3 minute connection there. Easy as pie.

The Dachau was very impressive. I will visit Auschwitz today.
