Day trips from Munich
We will have 8 full days in Munich (split 4 and 4) in late August, early September. We have seen most, if not all, the usual tourist sites in the city and many in the surrounding area. We need recommendations for interesting/unusual/different/scenic places to see by train or possibly bus in the area. (We will be in Salzburg and Vienna later.) We have already been to Nuremburg, Augsberg, Rottenburg, Oberammergau, Berchesgaden, Ludwig's castles. Any suggestions? Also, are there any new or unusual sites within Munich itself? Thanks for your help!

Have you spent any time in Munich? The three art museums, the Deutsches Museum,Hofbrau Hause, Englisher Garten, Nymphenburg Palace, Viktualien Market, Dachau, the Bavarian evenig at the HB Haus all make it a great place to spend time. You can also arrange for tours of Munich on foot or bike to explore Nazi history and more.

AisleSeat, yes we've been to Munich several times and have done all the things you listed. Maybe there's another walk we haven't done, and I know we could spend another day at Deutches Museum. Thanks for reminding me of these. Anyone else with day trip suggestions?

Hi crckwc1,
Mittenwald, beautiful village nestled next to the Alps Lake Starnberg Chiemsee Have fun as you plan! s |
Another vote for Chiemsee, as well as Tegernsee.
Have you ascended the Zugspitze from Garmisch? Gorgeous! We also enjoy Regensburg for a day trip. |
Regensburg is a nice town.
Going for a swim around the Isar (the part around the zoo) is pretty great, too. |
The palace at Herrenchiemsee is the largest of all the four Ludwig builds and is the most extensively decorated as well; an easy day trip by rail to Prien and then the ferry over from nearby Stock. IF you could combine that with your ongoing trip to Salzburg even better but if you do plan to leave Munich early in the day.

Bad Tölz
Tegernsee/Wallberg Andechs (Benedictine monastery) Benediktbeuern (another monastery) Freising |
Don't know if this is new to you or not, but, in Munich, a meal at http://www.andechser-am-dom.de/ is highly recommended. Yes, it's the best beer in Germany (the beer is also available at their monastery) but the food, atmosphere, and prices are also all excellent. Central location to boot.
A very nice beer garden in the suburbs is http://www.menterschwaige.de/ Much nicer than anything in the city. Easily reachable on the #15 or #25 tram (the menterschwaige stop). |
Thanks to each of you for the wonderful recommendations! Now we probably need more than 8 days.

Landhut is nice - Burg Trausnitz.
Kufstein - good castle and a couple of excellent charming restaurants. Have you seen the surfers on the Eisbach? Far southern end of the Englischer Garten. |
Thanks robrtino -- adding Kufstein, Landhut, Burg Trausnitz to my list. Yes, we've enjoyed watching the surfers -- were quite surprised that they manage in such a confined space.
