Day trips from Munich?
 

Can anyone recommend any day trips from Munich? I've been to Munich before and I'm going to find myself there again in early December. Can anyone recommend some interesting cities/places to visit that would be suitable day trip from Munich?

Day trips in the meaning that you don't need all day just to get there:

Freising (Old Town, Cathedral)
S-Bahn line #1, less than 1hr from Munich

Bavarian Oberland Railways have hourly services to the Schliersee, Bayerischzell area, as well as to Tegernsee and Bad Tölz. All three branches serve popular day trip destinations in the foothills of the Alps.

The Bayerischzell/Schliersee branch also stops at the cable car station for a ride up on Wendelstein mountain (great views).
This branch (all stations after Schliersee) offers many opportunities for short or long hikes in the quite pretty valley (not exactly strenous mountain climbing, more easy walking).

Trains (local and long distance) going to the West all call at Augsburg (less than 1hr from Munich). This town is a bit in the shadow of Munich, but has a beautiful Old Town district, with many patrician buildings of that era when the Fugger family ruled half of Europe. Especially nice with the Christmas Market spread out over most of the Old Town district.

But also everything else that already was mentioned here makes a nice day trip (though I have to admit that Ulm - besides the Cathedral - did not thrill me too much), except for the Dolomites which are too far.

I would recommend going to a town about a hour or so from Munich called Oberammergau. A train from Munich main station.
Oberammergau is close to mountains and you may be lucky enough to see snow in the quaint little village. A sight to see!

You could take the train to Salzburg. I believe it is either 2 or 3 hours away.

Andechs Monastery is a terrific place - love their monk-brewed beer and traditional food.

Another recommendation for Salzburg - easy to get to by train for a day trip and quite lovely.

Agree with Salzburg, but if you have a car, see the Berchtesgaden area, we particularly liked Bad Reichenhall. Also liked Andech's Monestary alot. Just a little further from Oberammergau is Mittenwald. Gorgeous village in a beautiful setting among the mountains. Our favorite in Bavaria. Also, check out King Ludwig's Neues Schloss / Herrenchiemsee (his Versaille replica). It's about an hour to from Munich and my favorite of his three castles/palaces.

The advantage of bookmarking is that it brings the post back to the top and others, who may not have seen it, will chime in. It works the same as topping. It does indicate that there are more responses however there will likely be more responses if a post is topped up. So both frustrating and beneficial.

In addition to all those mentioned, Nurmburg is only 1 hour away on the ICE train.

We enjoyed Nuremberg, so I would definitely add it to the list of possibilities. And it is a really easy train trip from Munich. We took a RE train, I believe it was rather than the ICE, and even on the slow train, it only took a couple hours.
