Day Trips From Milano

Will be in Milano with several extra days and am looking for cool, romantic day trip to take from Milano. Any suggestions?

Italy's Lake region is right above Milan, so that could be an option for a day trip. Last summer we visited Bellagio on Lake Como and it was absolutely lovely....pink and gold buildings, shops, cafes, and a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains. To get there, we took the train from Milan to Varenna (which is across the lake from Bellagio) and I don't think the train ride took more than an hour if I remember correctly. Of course, there are many other towns along Lake Como that maybe others can recommend. And there are also other lakes which I haven't yet had the opportunity to visit, such as Lake Orta and Lake Maggiore. I suggest reading up in some guide books about the places that sound interesting to you. If your library supplies back issues of National Geographic's "Traveler" magazine, look for the May/June 1997 issue...there is an extensive article on Italy's Lake region. If you'd like to see our photos of Bellagio, go to http://www.lunadesigns.com/travels/.

Just returned from Northern Italy. To add to your
Como itenerary, go to Villa Carlotta, a beautiful
place with wonderful gardens, which is on the west
side of the lake. Go for another beautiful lake,
Lago Maggiore. Drive around it. Go to Stressa and
take a boat to Isola Bella, a wonderful little
island, a real Garden of Eden. A second spot to
visit is along the Riviera. Portofino is one of the
nicest little port-towns in the world! And it has
some of the finest beaches in the Mediteranean! I've
never seen water as clear and blue as in that area.
Have a good tri

I live in Domodossola - Ossola valley - in the northern side of Italy. 1h and 30 minutes from Milan by train or car. I think that this is a beautiful land with mountain (Rosa Mountain, the highest in Europe) and falls (toce's fall, the higer in Europe - open only on Sunday).
greetings
Danilo

YES! Lake Como! It's absolutely beautiful. The train from Milano is about 40 min. or so.Then walk down to the lake from the station (maybe a 15 min walk). Be sure to take the SLOW boat trip to Belagia if it's a nice day. It will zig-zag across the lake to make stops at different landings. You'll take lots of pictures, have gorgeous views and a wonderful time! Sit in the open deck and sip something you've brought along with you. Don't forget your sunscreen. The hydrofoil is fast--but boring. You'll have to strain for a view thru badly scratched plexiglass.
Enjoy!

Something Danilo (above) didn't mention, the train from Locarno to Domodossola is THE most scenic we've ever taken. Locarno is at the northern end of Lake Maggiore, in Suisse.
