Day trips from Milan, besides Lake Como area
We'll be in Milan for three days during out mid-September trip to Italy. My wife is looking for day trips while I'm doing the business part of the trip. We've already been to Lake Como (but would certainly think about going again!) and have covered a good part of Milan before. Since we won't have a car, the destinations must be reachable by public transportation or a tour. If it make a difference, the days in question are a Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Any suggestions will be appreciated.

Howard,
Glad to see you are going back to Milan. We looked into taking the bus to Pavia to visit the Certosa. That looked like a nice trip, but you have to be careful of the opening and closing hours (closed in the middle of the day). The visitor's center gave us all the info about bus schedules etc. However we had a day of rain and canceled the trip. Tell you wife about the flea market on Saturday morning!

Goodmorning Howard,
Two good day trips by train out of Milan are, Cremona, and BergamoAlta.
Check the website for these or your travel books.I did both and enjoyed, but they do close for the 3 or 4 hours in afternoon,so plan accordingly.
Have fun
DEL

both of these places I

Howard, I would suggest two options. My first choice would be Stresa on Lago Maggiore--an easy train ride from Milano Centrale and different than Como.
The other is Bergamo Alta. You will probably have to taxi to the Alta from the station. If you had a car I would say Lago Orta, but alas. Actually, Lugano CH is only 1:10 from Milano and I love the place--very cosmopolitan.
You will have fun wherever.

agree that bergamo is a nice day trip. also since i was there in april i would suggest taking the city tour from the tourist offfice next to duomo. a combination walking and bus tour of the city including admission to see the last supper. well worth the money. we also went to varenna by train and it was great. you can take ferry to bellagio, then hydrofoil to como. and train back to milan. or ferry back to varenna either way a nice trip

Leo, Del and Bob, thanks for the suggestions. Now, of course, we have the reverse problem--more sites than time!
Tom, you've also given some good suggestions, but since we've been to the area before, yours fall into the "been there, done that" category!
