Day trips from Milan
I will work for one month in Milan and will have 3 free weekends..
What would you recommend? I thought about Como. Any suggestions? Grazie. |
Wow, that's easy.
My 3 choices - not in any order of preference: 1. Lake Como [lake, not city - though I enjoyed the part near the lake. However, you can skip Como and catch a train up to Varenna, for example. Varenna is delightful and from there you can catch ferries to Bellagio, Menaggio, etc, as well as Como. 2. Lake Maggiore, particularly the islands. You can also catch a train up to Domodossola and do the Centivalli train trip to Locarno in Switzerland. 3. Bergamo, specifically the Citta Alta, which is Renaissance Italy in miniature. Food there is fantastic, and there's a great art gallery too. I'm sure others have ideas, but these are the places I've visited and they're all good! |
Brazilian - Another great trip would be the Bernina Express mountain railway over to San Moritz.
Or you could go up to the Dolomites. Venice? Florence? Verona? The possibilities are endless :) Steve |
Hello BT: Don't forget Lugano; about 1 hour by train from Milan. Great for a weekend and more! Gradyghost

For a quick day trip...Vigevano - the Piazza Ducale is wonderful. Combine it with a visit to Pavia.
For a weekend... - Piedmont - do a winery weekend in either the Monferrato or the Langhe. A wonderful thing to do. What month will you be traveling? You might be able to experience the vendemmia, or grape harvest, the truffle festival in Alba, and the fresh porcini harvest. An Emilia Romagna weekend - Ferrara, Boglona... or Parma.... or Modena.... the food and countryside is exquisite in ER. Liguria - take the A4 to the A26 directly into Genoa, and enjoy a beautiful weekend on the Italian Riviera. The ride will take you about 2.5 hours. YOu can have a great city experience in Genoa, or go to Camogli and Portofino for Riviera flavor. Torino - take a weekend and drive/take the train to beautiful Torino. A totally different feel to Milano. You can spend the day wondering through Via Garabaldi, Piazza San Carlo, Corso Roma, the Cinema Museum, the Egyptian Museum. The Aosta would be another idea, and of course, Maggiore, Lugano, Como, Bergamo. So much to do, so little time!! |
