If your total trip is as long as two weeks you may even want to think about spending a few consecutive days out of London, possibly even by hiring a car for your time outside of London.
I am always surprised but the number of people saying Stonehenge is an absolute must, given how long it takes to get there from London and considering many people see nothing else in the area on that trip out of London. That's not to say I wouldn't tell you to go there, it just wouldn't make the top of any list of places to go. I think you'd be surprised to find how low the proportion of people in the UK who have been to Stonehenge is. |
I am with you Dave. I think the other day trip suggestions would be the priority for cheuvront. Plus the other suggested day trips have so much to offer including restaurant options, other sights to see along the way and in the towns. London has so many day trip options that are easy to do.

There have been some great suggestions. i do think one could easily spend two weeks in London, but the day trips are easy and well worth it. Evan Evans offers overnight and 2/3 day trips to various places. With a great train system one can easily go to York for the day. Personally I would forget Leeds...lovely gardens but most disappointing for the price of admission. They have simply ruined a beautiful and historic castle. Otherwise check the suggestions and plan according to your pleasure. Good luck. C.

I also like Earl Steinbicker's book Daytrips. Another good book is TimeOut's Weekend Breaks from London, it is very detailed and informative. Next week, I plan to do either Dover Castle, Rye, or Warwick Castle. Weather is a variable too, a miserable day for more indoor type of visits. Judy :-)
