Day trips from Lisbon
Hello,
Traveling to Lisbon over the holidays and staying for 6 days. Sintra is the obvious choice, but what other day trips from the city would be easy to take? We would prefer somewhere accessible by public transportation as that we are not planning to get a car. Thanks, Carl |
Just now writing up a report on Spain and Portugal in Depth. But we didn't spend much time in Portugal so others may have advice. Sintra, also Cascais and coastal area we did see.

Although not far from the city, Belem can take most of the day. Take a street car from the starting stop ....it fills up quickly. Several attraction including the magnificent Monastery . |
I am about to spend three nights in Evora, but I have previously considered it as a day trip. There is a bus.
|
Evora, Obidos, Cascais and the Estoril are all easy day trips by train or bus from Lisbon - of course Sintra is tops and closest - Belem is wonderful but really a part of Lisbon - accessible by tram.
|
Cabo di Rabo is not far from Sintra - a rugged outpost of the furtherst westernmost point on the European Continent (not including islands) - a large light house and huge waves when I was there - I took a bus from Sintra there but if driving it would be not far and you go thru Eucalyptus forests with a nice odor much of the way. I then took a bus to Cascais and went back to Lisbon that way - depending on how much time spend in Sintra you could if driving especially do the whole loop or even by bus and train back from Cascais.
