Day Trips from Kaiserslautern During Winter Holidays?
My brothers and I (along with our respective partners) will be spending the Christmas and New Year's Day holidays with our Dad, who recently moved to Kaiserslautern, Germany. We lived in Germany growing up, so we're not unfamiliar with the area. However, it has been many years and our Dad isn't the greatest planner.
Does anyone have any recommendations for sites and/or day trips from K-Town during that week between Christmas and New Year's Day? Is anything open? Is there any decent skiing within driving distance? Given it's proximity to both France and Switzerland, are there any sites worth taking a drive/train to tour for a day or two? I know we'll only be an hour and a half south of Frankfurt and west of Stuttgart.
We're open to suggestions, and appreciate any tips! Many thanks!

Well Amsterdam could be a sweet two-day stay -too far for day trip but not far from Frankfurt by train and the week between Xmas and New Years hops -one of most popular times of year as folks flock here for fun - lots of younger folk.
If taking trains book early at www.bahn.de/en - German Railways site for nice discounts over walk-up fares.
The French Vosges has skiing -perhaps nearest to you.

Speyer is a good destination and only one hour from K'lautern. It has a Christmas market after Christmas (but not on the 25th or 26th.) Very unusual in Germany. And the Technik Museum is tops. The cathedral there is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
