Day trips from Halifax, England?

I will be in the Halifax area for 4 days in late april. I would like to do a day trip to York. But other then that I have no idea what is feasable. Will be using trains. Thanks!

Haworth, the home of the Brontes, is a short bus ride away. Leeds is a happening city with a good choice of restaurants, cultural activities and shopping. Ditto with Manchester. Both connected by direct train service. You can also get to Windermere in Lake District by train (usually changing at Preston). And of course the Yorkshire Dale is almost on your doorstep, and many buses go there via Skipton. Going south there is the Peak District, with Chatsworth House, Hadden Hall, Bakewell, Buxton and Hope Valley being some of the many worthwhile sights. A car would be a help, as there is only one rail line crossing east to west (Hope Valley line from Manchester to Sheffield) but buses reach most places.

If me, I would check out Chester for Roman history and sites.

I presume you have to visit Halifax on business do you ? There can't be any other reason - it's horrible.

If you can hire a car I'd suggest going north east through the Yorkshire Dales and North York Moors to the lovely fishing village of Whitby.

Actually you can get to Whitby without a car. There is a good bus service from York to Whitby and either a return or over to Scarborough and then back to York. If you would like the bus schedule let me know.

Skipton has a pretty impressive castle - about 900 yars old. See http://www.skiptoncastle.co.uk

If you're interested in military history, a visit to the Royal Armouries in Leeds might be a good idea - see http://www.royalarmouries.org/visit-us/leeds

Shibden Hall may be worth a look - http://www.calderdale.gov.uk/leisure...all/index.html

Take your pick of castles and abbeys - are you renting a car or using public transport?

Places off the beaten track but local

Bolling Hall - One of my favorite museums, free entrance.

On the outskirts of Bradford so an easy trip, I don't recommend the city itself even though I was there 3 times in the last year - Family, ya know?

Cliffe Castle in Keighley

Also free, not medieval but a beautiful Victorian house.

Shidben Hall in Halifax - My sisters favorite since she lives local

Skipton would be good - local(ish) and you can shop while you are there - the castle is at the end of the Main Street.
