Day trips from Erlanger (near Nuremberg); visit Berlin? any bargain shopping?
I plan to join my daughter who has a business trip to Erlanger (near Nuremberg). We arrive Sunday,Oct 5- and leave on Sunday morning October 12. Our flights are in and out of Nuremberg. Her business meetings are all day (including dinner) Tues-Thurs in Erlanger. I would appreciate suggestions on what to see and do when she is in meetings. We both would like to visit Berlin, maybe Friday-Saturday? How can we do that? Please help us with any suggestions, itineraries, . By the way, are there any bargains we should shop for?

You have lots of options for daytrips from Erlangen (spelling!), at least if you have a car.
- Bamberg is a beautiful old town.
- Würzburg has a gorgeous baroque palace with Tiepolo paintings.
- In the vicinity of Würzburg, there are many beautiful walled wine villages, e.g. Iphofen, Ochsenfurt.
- There is the Romantic Road with Rothenburg, Dinkelsbühl, Nördlingen.
Driving time from Erlangen to Berlin is about 4:30. The train takes 4:08. (In Berlin, a car is a hindrance.)

mhull,
I think you'll love Franconia.
I really enjoyed Coburg. A city that gets very little mention here. The hill top fortress is very interesting. The Coburg bratwurst is excellent - cooked over pine cones. There is a vast nature park close by with great trails for biking or hiking.
Bayreuth is a charming baroque city that you might find interesting, especially if you are a musicologist.
Berlin is a little far away for a short trip, in my opinion. You might opt for Dresden, which is about half way there and not as big, but packed with sights and charm. I would recommend a paddle steamer cruise on the Elbe.
Don't short change Nuremberg. A great city with a lot of history - also serving great bratwurst.

If you haven't been to Munich I would vote for that for the weekend.
Regensburg is another beautiful smaller city in northern Bavaria that would be easy to visit.
As noted, there is lots to see in Nuremberg on the days your daughter is working. Be sure to try some Lebkuchen, great ginger cookies that are traditional for the Christmas season but are available year round at some stores in Nuremberg

"We would prefer not to rent a car, but can we see these sights using trains and buses."
Bamberg and Nürnberg are each less than 30 minutes by train. It is cheaper to buy a regular ticket than the Bayern-Ticket.
Würzburg, Coburg and Bayreuth are about 1.5 hours by train. Use a Bayern-ticket round-trip.
You are in a great part of Germany for train travel.

Thanks again. Because of your input,we are NOT going to Berlin. Any suggestions for a reasonably priced (not fancy) hotel/Bed and Breakfast and places to eat in any of the nearby cities, especially Nuremberg. We like local places that are near transportation and/or sight seeing.

hrs.com is a very good way to get a good bargain on a hotel. It is also a very good research tool, even if you do not want to use them for your reservation. They will give you the distance from various hotels to the city center and the train station.

BTW the Nuremberg train station is right at the edge of the pedestrian zone. The Nuremberg pedestrian zone has extensive shopping and the city's major sights.
I like the Marientor Ibis in Nürnberg (Nuremberg), a chain but still a great location and a good breakfast.
