Amy,
Any of the following are doable in day trips with or without a car

Kilkenny City and Castle and its wonderful shops - a 2 hr train ride (see www.cie.ie and the Irish Rail link)

Wicklow Mts and Glendalough - escorted bus trip with Bus Eireann or doable on your own in a car - watch out for the sheep and the mists on nthe mountains

Newgrange and its ancient passage graves and the Castle at Trim and the Hill of Tara etc - see the Bus Eireann web site via www.cie.ie for details of tours etc and regular bus services. Also doable by car.

One piece of advise re car hire in Dublin - the city is a nightmare to drive in and especially at rush hour (7.00-10.00) and rush hour extends.

Hope this helps you make up your mind, see www.ireland.travel.ie for links to the regional web sites for the above areas

Cathy
