Day Trips From Copenhagen

I am considering a trip to Copenhagen and was wondering what people's favorite day trips are from the city?

I am interested in possibly visiting the Louisiana art museum and a northern beach, but was wondering if it is possible to do just by the train or if renting a car is better?

Thanks for any suggestions! :)

Visiting Louisiana by train is easy and absolutely worth it. My favorite day trip is to Frederiksborg Castle; make sure you go on a nice day so you could enjoy its gardens too. It is possible to combine these two on one day but to do it go on a day when Louisiana is open later. A day trip to Roskilde is also worthwhile and easy to do by train. I just visited these places in late April. Click on my name for the trip report if you're interested.

@Tripplanner001 -- Thanks for your helpful suggestions. I also read your trip report and it was great. On the whole, did you think Malmo was worth visiting? We will be traveling at a leisurely pace and will be in Copenhagen for 5 days total. Louisiana and Frederiksborg are definitely on our list, but I'm not sure if a trip to Malmo would spread us too thin.

I thought Roskilde well worth seeing.

If I did the trip again, I would skip Malmo. Go to Roskilde instead, or Helsingor.

This is super helpful. Thank you :)

You can twin Louisiana (fabulous) with nearby Helsingor - to see 'Hamlet's Castle' beautifully perched overlooking the sea.

Roskilde and Viking ships only if interested in Viking ship museum.

Frederskborg Castle is neat - in Hillerod.

Trains go everywhere -better than driving - look at day passes for the regional train system. For more hints on where to go by train here check www.budgeteuropetravel.com and www.ricksteves.com.

I did not think Malmo is worth it if just in Copenhagen for 5 days and doing other day trips which IMO are nicer.

My favorite day trip from Copenhagen goes from Copenhagen across the bridge/tunnel over the Sound (smashing views) to Malmo - switch to train to Lund - neat college town - really nice for a taste of Sweden and then to Helsingborg for ferries to Helsingor (Hamlet's Castle) and then back to Copenehagen - all by train and called 'Round the Sound' trip.

Parts of Sweden on this loop resemble Minnesota and Wisconsin- big red barns.

, but I'm not sure if a trip to Malmo would spread us too thin.>

I would not put it above the other two as a town -nice but modern city - nice like any Swedish town -but the reason for going IMO would be to take the awesome train ride over the bridge/tunnel over and under the Sound =great vistas from highest point.
