Day trips from Cagnes sur Mer

My husband and I will be visiting France in April. We're staying with relatives in Cagnes sur Mer (near Cannes and Nice) and wanted to know some good day trips for vineyards and ruins/cathedrals/castles/etc.

We've already done Carcassonne, and would consider staying a night in Avignon or Aix-en-Provence, so suggestions for an inexpensive (2-star) inn or B&B would also be appreciated. Thanks!

Vence and St. Paul de Vence would be the first two places that come to mind. If you like art at all, visit the Foundation Maeght in St. Paul de Vence.

You might enjoy Antibes, especially the old town area, and in the opposite direction Mentone is a lovely place to visit. In April it should be heavenly there.

Just a couple suggestions. Have a good trip.

A very nice trip is the drive up to Grasse, Tourrettes-sur-Loup, and finally Gourdon, which has a very fine castle looking down (and down and down!) over the valley.

Depending on the day of the week--call and check--you could visit the superb Matisse Chapel in Vence. Nice has a nice group of Roman ruins up in the Cimiez district, near the Matisse Museum, and in Vieux Nice are several interesting churches. This isn't really cathedral country, but the countryside has any number of smaller churches that are lovely. You might like to visit the Russian Orthodox church in Nice itself.

I think you'll find plenty to do in the area around Cagnes, and unless you have several weeks at your disposal (lucky you if so!) you won't need to venture over to the Avignon area. However, to see a variety of Roman ruins, you could drive along the coast to Fréjus. The next area with a concentration of things Roman would be Arles, Nimes, and the Pont du Gard, a considerable drive from Cagnes.

Hi

Arles and/or Nimes are about 2hrs away by car.

Eastern Languedoc would probably need an overnight stay.

Thanks to everyone for their replies. We have visited most of the places you've suggested, and enjoyed them all. We will likely check out Frejus and Antibes. :)
