Day trips from Augsburg

I will be going to Augsburg in August to stay with family friends. I am looking for suggestions for any day trips that I can take while I am there. I will be able to get to the train/ bus station but will not have access to a car. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Munich, Fussen and Mad Ludwig's castles, Rothenburg, Nurnberg for starters are probably an hour or so at most by train and are all great day trips.

Nürnberg and Munich are about an hour or less by train. Munich is the closest and probably worth more than one day trip. Füssen and Rothenburg ob der Tauber are 2-2.5 hours each way so they require a bit more commitment. You might also consider Ulm which is a little over one hour.

I should have added one of the websites you can check schedules with:

http://bahn.hafas.de/bin/query.exe/en

It will have buses as well as trains.

Yes underestimated Fussen and Rothenburg. But check into the bargain Bavarian Pass that would cover many trains on these routes though not the fastest trains. Details on www.bahn.de site referenced above. Sold at stations in Bavaria - all 4 places are in Bavaria
