Day Trips from Athens?
Hi, please recommend a do-able day trip from Athens during mid Feb. I prefer using public transporation.
Any place to go that is a contrast from Athens? Quaint villages, etc.? Thanks |
Do some research on the daytrip to Sounion Bay by bus.

Also consider Delphi. If you don't mind going by organized tour, it is possble as a day trip. Check with your hotel for availability.
Delphi is one of the most amazing ancient sites in Greece. Another unique thing about Delphi is its situation - ancient ruins at the foot of Mt Parnassos, modern ski resort at the top! :-) |
Also consider Nafplio. It's 2.5 hrs by bus (E11) so can make for a long day, but it's a wonderful town on the coast near Mycenae. Very nice shops, restaurants, interesting history and very pedestrian friendly. We spent several days there, but when our daughter studied in Athens she made several day trips there.

If it's a sunny sunny day, consider going to Piraeus for a 40-50 minute ferry to Aegina. Look at the tumbled ruin of Temple of Apollo at end of harborside. Check if there's a cross- island bus and get off at the Temple of Aphaia.... the best- preserved temple in all of Greece. The 360° view will take your breath away.
Walk down the "Shortcut" (handmade sign shows the way) to beach town of Ayia Marina. It's not quaint, but in Feb. everbody in town will be Greek. Get a coffee or a drink, find a taxi back to the port. Go 1 street back from the water & find a taverna the locals eat & drink at. Socialize. They won't be quaint, but they'll be nice, and funny probably too -- especially if you make a joke about G.W. Bush. At sunset, catch a ferry back to town. Enjoy. |
