Mbtr - You can visit many places easily and cheaply by public transport from Florence:
- Siena, Pisa, Lucca, San Gimignano, Cortona, Arezzo, Orvieto, Cinque Terre ... to name a few.
For organised day- or half-day bus tours from Florence consider CAF Tours or SITA:
http://www.caftours.com/en/regtoursac.htm

Hope this helps ...

Hi rn,
The SITA bus runs from near the SMN train station to Siena - 13E RT about 1:30 hr
There are trains from the SMN station to Pisa/Lucca and Orvieto.

The SITA tours are good value. You can also do your own tour using SITA buses - the new web site for routes out of Florence is here: http://www.acvbus.it/index.php?SEZ=9
A fairly leisurely trip is the one hour ride to Greve in Chianti www.greve-in-chianti.com and/or Panzano 10 mins further on - try to select a bus that takes the route through Grassina rather than through Ferrone. A very few times a day this route (# 364) goes all the way to Gaiole. This provides a comfortable way to see the Chianti countryside and if your're energetic you can hike up to one of the castles near these destinations.
