Day trips
 

I will be in Dublin the 1 st week of Sept.. Looking for Day Trips to surrounding areas. I've visited Dublin in the past, hop on is great. Which places would you choose? I'm east to please. Love looking at the countryside, structures, natural formations, just about anything , in Ireland, will grab my attention.

Does Irish Rail still run day tours by train? Google that and you can get a host of good ideas.

There are a few regular day trips, Wicklow and Glendalough, Newgrange etc.. Then the trips arising with the motorway network 8 and 10 hour trips to Cork/Blarney, Cliffs/Burren I think there is even a Ring of Kerry daytrip which along with the Giants Causeway trip are 14 hours +..

Have you considered more than one base??

I'll be in Thurles for 2 days on "Sister City" business. After 9Sept. I'll be free to wander.
I will have a rail pass and may just ride the rails and gaze out the window.
As Russ suggested, I'll check out Rail Tours.

Highly under looked town is Thurles well off most tourists radar, Founding home of the GAA, Italian style Cathedral, the Famine/War museum in St Mary's a church with a lot of history (they will probably keep it open for you on twin towns business)You might also get a ride out to Farney Castle in Holycross?

What tony wrote.. Thurles is a pretty nice town with a nice (and pretty big) town square. You can also go up Devil's Bit (by car) for a stunning view over many counties and the quintessential green pastures and hills.
In addition to what Tony suggested, there are also major sights nearby: Rock of Cashel, Cahir Castle, Swiss Cottage, Jerpoint Abbey. Kilkenny and Nenagh or Roscrea. Not all accessible by rail though, or least not too convinient. The bus is often more convenient as it drops you off right at Cahir Castle or in "downtown" Cashel, for example.
