Day trip: Umbria to Rome

Hello, we are staying in Umbria for week in October 2006 (Panicale). We awould like to visit Rome for a day trip, we will have a car, but it seems like taking the high speed train might make more sense. Does anyone know where we could get the train to Rome and what would be the best sights to see in just a day in Rome? Thank you. Mikek

Driving to Chiusi and taking the train looks like a good option. From the rail station in Rome, you can walk to the Colliseum and Forum, take a taxi to St. Peter's and then walk back to the Piazza Navonna and the Pantheon, then take another taxi back to the train station.

Are you planning to visit Perugia while in Panicale? It's an amazing city.

Chiusi is the closest station but check the Eurostar schedules because I don't believe all the high speed trains stop there. Panicale is a great hilltown but be aware that driving to and from Panicale is a slow process due to its location on top of a steep hill. Last July we stayed at Villa Monte Solare, between Panicale and Colle San Paolo. It has an excellent restaurant.

Yes, Chiusi is your best option---unless you drive to Orvieto--but the trains are all non-ES and take 1:26.

Rome in a day, if your into history see the ancient city, collesum, forum, pantheon. If your into art or are catholic/religious see the vatican and its mueseum. If your into none of the above stroll around between plaza navonna and trevi fountain great walk. Sorry about my spelling.
