Consider taking an excursion tour. Insider Tours has a combined day trip to both Travnik and Jajce for 69 Euros per person. I did not take this excursion but did take an Insider tour within Sarajevo and would use them again. I had a car and drove from Sarajevo to Travnik on the way to Jajce, where I spent a night.
In my opinion, a self-guided day trip by bus just to Travnik wouldn't really be worth the effort - the town isn't that big and there isn't tons to see there - but combined with Jajce it would be well worth stopping for a few hours in Travnik especially with a guide. I'm not sure how practical it would be to see both in one day by public bus.
Jajce is really unique, with the amazing waterfall below the town, and the scenery on the ride from Travnik to Jajce is especially beautiful. Both towns have wrecked fortresses above them that I'm sure you would visit on the excursion. You'd probably visit the old watermills near Jajce too - there's a picture of them on the tour page on their website for this excursion.
If 69 Euros/person seems too pricey, I am guessing you would be able to find a guide and a driver for less than that, though. Everything seemed really cheap to me in Bosnia, but the Insider tours did seem a tad expensive compared to everything else. But they have the reputation...
