Day trip to Toledo from Madrid

Can anyone suggest the best way to do a day trip to Toledo from Madrid. We will be in Madrid for just a few days in late January, and wonder how best to get to Toledo without having to rent a car and contend with the crazed Spanish drivers. We don't think we need a tour guide once we get to Toledo. Also, any restaurant suggestions there would be helpful. Thanks!

Timetable for train on http://direl.com/hortren.html, for bus on http://direl.com/horbus.html. Ticket about five euros.

We took the bus to and the train from . . . the bus is much better and faster than the train.<BR><BR>You're correct, you won't need a tour or a guide, everything is within walking distance and very interesting.<BR><BR>Have a great trip,<BR>Sandy

We took the train in Madrid (Atocha Station)to Toledo. It took about 30 minutes or so. From the train station we took the local bus into town. We didn't make an reservations for the train in Madrid. We pretty much showed up in the morning and bought our tickets for that day. Have fun, Toledo is very interesting!

We also took the train (atocha) to Toledo. That was one of our highlights of our Spain trip. Take the 9am or so train and stay until 6pm. We thought we could catch the 4pm train, but if you want to eat lunch and relax a bit, then take the later one. Once you arrive, there were many many people lining up for the 6 Bus to the town, but we walked. It was a crisp blue sky day so we walked. A little steep, but definitely doable. There is construction at the Alcazar so it is closed, disappointingly. <BR><BR>Have lunch at Casa Pepe as everyone has suggested on the board. (from my research on this board, I think it's the only restaurant mentioned for Toledo). The tapas were delicious. Though they held us captive and would not give us the check. <BR><BR>Have fun!!!

I read in some guide book or on the internet that there is a flea market in Toledo on Tuesdays. Does anyone have more info., like is it open year round?

Thanks to all for the helpful suggestions. Can hardly wait to get out there. Happy New Year, and happy travelling.

Take the train, not the bus. I took the bus, and during most of the trip it was stuck in horrendous traffic jams. The bus ride was also nauseating due to the bumpiness of the bus and the stop-and-go traffic. On my return to Madrid I took the train.<BR><BR>With the train there is a longer walk to the historic center, but the greater comfort of the train more than compensates for this.
