Day trip to south Sweden?

Heading to Copenhagen soon. On advice of many here, we decided not to make a stop in Stockholm as it would take three days away from Denmark (and in retrospect our days have filled fast with other fun things). But we would like to take one day to drive to Sweden and explore a little. We will have a rental car (again on the advice of people here) for a few days so might as well use it.
We are two adults, two preteen kids and my mother who doesn't get around particularly well. We all love history, culture, theatre, and wildlife. Suggestions for a day trip?

If you have any interest in hand blown glass glass tableware and art I suggest a stop at Orrefors, Kosta, and Boda.

I trust you have considered day trips within Denmark, e.g., Roskilde.

Don't forget to bring IDs/passports for everyone if you are going to cross the border between Denmark and Sweden.

Thanks for the suggestion spaarne!
We have day trips already planned to Roksilde and Kronsborg each.

Arild & Lund are charming places to visit. Kosta, Boda & Orrefors are too far for a day trip from Denmark IMO. There is an IKEA museum in Älmhult but even that is a little too far for a day trip.
Inform the rental company that you are taking the car out of Denmark. It won't be an issue, but best to let them know. I prefer the ferry from Helsingoer to Helsingborg rather than the bridge. There is no or not much price difference between the two.

Round the Sound is a great day trip from Copenhagen thru Sweden and back - first take the thrilling bridge tunnel over the Sound to Malmo and head to Lund - really nice university town

then go onto Helsingborg and take the ferry to Helsingor (Elsinore) - Hamlet's town with famous castle.

Return via Denmark to Copenhagen.

Thank you so much Odin and PalenQ! It would be so fantastic to see the IKEA museum but I'm sure I'm the only family member interested.
Around the Sound is so interesting! Certainly something to consider.

It looks like if we take the bridge, the E6 south to the 9 is one option along the coast or E6 north to Arlid, or E22 inland to Lund and beyond. Are there spots an hour or so past Lund that would be of interest? The Google Earth photos look beautiful in each direction, but if there aren't places to stop and either take in the scenery or do something like visit a castle the kids will get bored. DH and I spent days driving around Iceland and loved every minute of simply exploring but I'm afraid the kids need a little more planning, so I sincerely appreciate all the advise.

A nice route is to take the scenic route from Copenhagen along the coastal road (152) going northwards to Helsingoer and take the ferry. This road finishes right at the ferry terminal.
From Helsingborg, it's an easy journey to Arild and all around that area, eg Mölle and the Kullaberg Nature Reserve, Kullen Cliffs and Kullen Lighthouse.

Torekov is a summer resort.

Otherwise take the bridge (I personally don't think driving across it is that interesting) and go to Malmö, Lund and Landskrona which is a medieval town.

Hamlet's Castle in Helsingor is the castle of their dreams.

Odin, considering taking the ferry one way but looking online I can only find tickets that include Rodby-Puttgarden. Is it easy to buy at the ticket office the same day as travel? And does each person need a ferry ticket as well as the car? I can't seem to find those ticket prices anywhere - just the vehicle.

Kullaberg sounds fascinating - thanks!

Yes it is very easy to buy the ticket at the ferry terminal. There are several kiosks, the one furthest to your left is the one you want, since it is manned. Your ticket will include all the passengers and the car. It will be about $60 one way or thereabouts. Ferry takes 15-20 mins and also departs every 15 mins and unless its at night when they are every half an hour, the service operated by Scandlines and HH Ferries.
