day trip to Salzburg from Vienna

We will be Vienna for 4 days and want to take a day to Salzburg. Does any recommend the bus tour which costs about 125 USD per person, 13 hours round trip?

Is it possible for us to take train or bus by ourselves? Thanks!!

Can't help, but I am looking for day trips from Vienna, so I hope somebody can chime in and advise.

I did a bus day trip from Vienna to Salzburg and enjoyed it. had some free time in Salzburg which we like but also did a side trip to a town off the main highway. It gave us a taste of the area.
I booked it online before we left home.

You can do it on your own and save a lot of money!

Another good day trip is to Melk and its gorgeous abbey by train with a return by boat/train through Durnstein.

What train/buses did you take to Salzburg? I looked up train fare from Vienna to Salzburg and it was 89 euro one way. Is there a cheaper one? Thanks

I stand corrected.... a roundtrip Vienna-Salzburg-Vienna train ticket in 2nd class appears to be 161 Euros for 2 persons!

See if you can rent a car for the day!

You can easily do a day trip train Vienna to Melk- touring Melk Abbey - a great boat trip down the Danube River from Melk to Krems and return by train to Vienna
inclusive price about 47 euro

Many leave the boat at Durnstein tour this famous village and then take local train to Krems - connecting to Vienna - service about each hour but check for last return about 9:30 I think.

look to the following

www.ddsg-blue-danube.at

you can buy the ticket at the Westbahnhof in Vienna. Ticket window

Note the firm also has other combi offerings including a bike tour of the Danube / Wachau area.

The bus tour is not that great to Salzburg as you have limited time there-

auto rental is an option - but the train round trip is good - yes a little more expensive - but quick 2 1/2 hours plus, comfortable , fine trains and the big plus frequent service that permits an early departure and later return to Vienna allowing much more time to see things you like - not what the tour company allows .
for trains

www.oebb.at

your ticket allows any departure and return so you can be flexible.
Major sights in Salzburg are mmostly within walking distance so easy to get around
