The Altstadt or old city of Salzburg is very compact. You should be able to see quite a bit, just maybe not as much in-depth as you'd like. Be sure to visit the Hohensalzburg fortress and then walk down Getriedegasse to Mozart's birthplace. In between, there is much to see.

Sarah, we have always arrived by car, but this website says the train station is only a 15-minute walk to the Altstadt: www.salzburg.info
Here's another website that has some good info:

The bus ride is about 10 minutes from the train station to the Altstadt.
You can easily see the main sights in a day trip if you arrive early.
Just be sure to take the funicular up the hill to the Fortress Hohensalzburg to save a lot of time.

The train station is on the other side of the Salzach river and is more than a 15 minute walk to reach the Alstadt and an even longer walk to reach the fortress. The walk is enjoyable, but might be pretty chilly in November. There are frequent busses that run to/from the station. I really enjoyed my lunch at the Glockenspiel Café across from the square.
