Day trip to Salamanca from Madrid

Hi, I'm considering a day trip from Madrid to Salamanca as part of a trip around sept/oct. Is it worth it if I'm stuck in a train 2 hours each way? I won't have a car so am restricted to train/bus.

I already have consiberable time elsewhere and am adding a day to my itinery, but due to hotel bookings I am restricted to staying in Madrid. If anyone has another suggestion for a day trip from Madrid (except Toledo/Cordoba/Sevilla, which I'm already visiting).

Thanks all.

Segovia! Salamanca to me was too far for a daytrip, I think the train/bus runs 2:30. Of my daytrips I did in Spain (Arcos, Toledo, Segovia), Segovia was by far my favorite.

I think Salamanca is too far for just a day trip. I'd suggest the El Escorial instead. It's closed on Monday, though, if that makes a difference in your itinerary.

Thanks for your replies RAR and CFW - clearly I'm being too optimistic about travel times...

We also liked Segovia. It takes about an hour each way on the bus from the Principe Pio station in Madrid. We went in early October last year, and it was beautiful!

If you go, I highly recommend the walk along the river below the city walls with a view up to the Alcazar.

We have some pictures from our trip on our Webshots page, if you want to get a feel for what it was like:

Ah Salamanca! Yes, perhaps too far for a day trip from Madrid, but worth a stay if you have time. Good ttain connection. Some years ago we were there several weeks in studying Spanish mysticism. Side trips to Avila and Segovia and such which are also nice.

Salamanca does have a certain charm with its Roman bridge and old/new cathedrals and ancient University and Plaza Major.
