Day trip to Nice?

Can one do a daytrip from Avignon to Nice?

Hi

I assume you are thinking of driving ?

The answer is yes, but the day in Nice will be much shorter in July August.

I'm not sure what Peter is telling you, but I can tell you that you are looking at about 3 hours each way. Doesn't leave a lot of time for Nice unless you leave Avignon early and return late. Maybe that's what Peter meant about a short day in Nice.

Although I have no idea what your overall plans are, I would suggest that there are many places a lot closer that would be worth visiting. A few hours in Nice is nice (pardon the repetition) but staying closer to Avignon and visiting places like Cassis, Arles, Nimes, St. Remy, Fontaine de Vaucluse, Aix en Provence, Aigues-Mortes, and a dozen other spots might be more rewarding for the amount of driving you would have to do. Good luck.

I think what he meant was in July/August the traffic will be so bad that the trip will take even much longer than usual - leaving little time to see anything.

Redd,
is too far for a day trip, even if you take the TGV, is a 3 hours journey each way...

The TGV doesn't actually run from Avignon to Nice; the trip is slow because the trains go over the regular tracks.

ReddVelvet,

What about an overnight in Nice?

And 3 hours from Avignon to Nice is really pushing it. You'd have to drive à la française and not hit any traffic. We love Nice, but I agree a daytrip from Avignon would be a bit much. If it's the coast you want, consider either Marseille or Cassis. The old port and surrounding areas in Marseille are under-rated - and if you want a something really quaint and gorgeous, you can do a lot worse than Cassis. Either one would be about 1 1/2 hours from Avignon (on the autoroute) - certainly more doable than Nice....

Thanks for all your input. I wasn't planning on driving I was hoping to train it there. I have been to Nice before but I just thought my girlfriend might want to see a bit of the french riviera but Cassis or Marseilles sounds great too. I agree a one nighter is in order for a visit to Nice. We are going to be based in Villeniuve les Avignon for 4 nights and would like to do some day trips. I definitely want to go to St. Raephael .

Why St.-Raphael? It's basically a resort with not much to see besides the archaeological museum. Nearby Fréjus, however, has fine Roman ruins.

Villeneuve is a perfect place to stay..walking distance to Avignon or take the bus to go there..
My cousin lives at Les Angles, few minutes away from Villeneuve ...

St. Raphael happens to be on a bus tour out of Avignon. And since we are only staying for 4 nites we wanted to do some day trips. And since our mode of transportation is either train or car do you have any other suggestions of where we should go?
