Day Trip to Melk from Vienna

We are planning a trip to Vienna in September and are considering a trip to Melk. I am wondering about the best way to plan this. I did an advanced search and did not see much current information. Any advice would be appreciated to plan this day trip.

Please make this trip . It makes for a fine and interesting day.
It is best to pick a good weather day naturally.. No reservations for this are needed , so you can be most flexible.

The combi ticket is the best way to do this

If you arrive in later September , the wine grape harvest should be in progress.

Try a glass of the newly fermenting grapes known as Sturm.
Another special thing is the Apricot Marmelade

A fun stop on the boat is Durnstein.
This a most beautiful small village . Castle ruins above where King Richard held for ransom.
Many little places to sample wine and schnaps, Walk through the wine gardens and also view the old homes and buildings 14- 15th century.
Also a fine Stift Church. This year celebrates 600 years anniversary. A great contrast to Stift Melk .
Easy to make a connection back to Vienna by taking the regional train from Durnstein to the train station in Krems.

If one is willing to take extra time and does just a little resarch Krems/ Stein offers many great things too.

Try to pick a train without changes ( some require a quick change of train )
