Day trip to Melk and Krems

We will be taking a day trip from Vienna by train to Melk, boat to Krems and train back to Vienna. The day will be a celebration of my healthy father's 80th birthday. Does anyone have suggestions for unforgetable meals?

No, I have no ideas but would be looking for suggestions also as we will be doing that same thing in September.

An unforgettable meal of mine was had at the Hotel Richard Löwenherz in Dürnstein. It's right near where you'll be.

The hotel is high up on the north side of the Danube, with a great restaurant with a fabulous view and excellent cuisine and service.

I then took the boat back to Vienna from the dock below.

This is a very historic town and hotel. Read the history.

thanks castleblanca,
I went to the website and it does look truly fantastic! Do you know if the boat that goes between Melk and Krems would let us off in Durnstein and then back on to go to Krems?

When I made this day-trip a few years ago, it was possible to get off in Dürnstein. However, please check with the travel office in Vienna. I bought my ticket from the ÖBB (Austrian Federal Railways).

I visit Austria a couple/three times every year, and this particular time I decided to make this trip, as I read a flyer about the combo-ticket at the train station. It was great!

Be sure to visit the small prison where Richard Löwenherz (Richard the Lionhearted) was held after coming back from the crusades.

I am so excited! We leave in 3 days and have never been to Austria before. Thanks for the good advice.

When we lived in Vienna years ago, we use to go to Durnstein regularly and the Richard the Lionhearted Hotel was our favorite place for lunch. If the weather is good, you can sit outside and look at the gorgeous views over the Danube Valley.

Have a great trip. Austria is beautiful.

Not a meal per se, but the Melk monastery has a beautiful garden and a little self-serve cafe. You can get a refreshing snack and sit on the patio, overlooking the lovely garden. It would make a nice break in the trip.
