Day trip to Lake Como from Milan Cadorna
 

hi, I'm staying just opposite the Milan Cadorna station, and would like to plan a day trip to lake como.

I am confused - i have read reports which suggest I can take a train from a Nord station in Cadorna to Lake Como. Can any one tell me the exact station names, so I can try searching for it on the Nord website?

I tried, but it shows no trains for middle December. Thanks!

If you input Milano Cadorna as the starting point and simply Como as the ending point you'll get schedules for trains to the city of Como.

If you want to go to the mid-lake area then make the ending point Varenna-Esino. The routing to Varenna will take you through Milano Centrale where you will have to change trains.

The mid Lake area can of course be reached from Como by bus too http://www.sptlinea.it/
And if you want to take a Lake Como boat, Como Lago, the railway station where you arrive by coming from Milano Cadorna, is just a few steps from the boat's pier.

I was thinking of Lake Como as a getaway from Milan (i planned 2 nights there, but realize there isn't much to see/do for kids) and maybe just take the ferry and the funicular tram - these are in the town of Como - so which station should I be keying in?

There were once two separate railway networks. The national network had a line from Milano Centrale or Milano Porta Garibaldi to Como S. Giovanni and on to Switzerland. The local Ferrovie Nord network had a line from Milano Cadorna to Como Lago - tracks stop there as the station is just in front of the lake by the ferry pier.

Now the situation is a bit more complex as the national system and the local system have made up a society, Trenord, running regional trains for Regione Lombardia on both networks. Both parent societies hire trains and drivers to the regional company, you do not have to be concerned who will be running but it will be under the Trenord name.

But the actual tracks are always the same, so the track starting from Milano Cadorna (aka Milano Nord Cadorna) goes to Como Lago (aka Milano Nord Lago). From there you can go on by ferry.

The Como S. Giovanni station is not as convenient as it halfway along an hill, higher than the lake and more distant. As the railway track there is very steep, a tunnel bypass has been built so some long distance trains bypass Como and do not stop at all.

Just as a note, the first time we went to Lake Como, it was a day trip just to the town of Como. OK.
Then a few years later we spent a couple days in Bellagio. Amazing. To this day I wonder why we went to Como for the day -- it has almost no relation to the beauty of Lake Como (particularly mid lake) itself!
