Day trip to islands from Dubrovnik - which island?

We have 3 days in Dubrovnik in September, and would like to do a day trip to one of the islands.

What would you recommend? Lokrum, Elafiti or Mlget? Which one is most unique and interesting?

Thank you!

Lokrum is a tiny island close to the old city. A stroll around it makes a pleasant change from sightseeing in the city, but the trip needs only a couple of hours.

The three Elafiti islands, Koločep, Lopud and Šipan, can be reached by Jadrolinija's passenger ship (www.jadrolinija.hr). There are pretty villages around their harbours.
Mljet is sparsely populated but is very scenic. There is a fast catamaran from Dubrovnik (www.gv-line.hr).

It is difficult (if not impossible) to see all 3 of the Elafiti islands in one day using the Jadrolinija ferries but it is possible to take a boat tour to all 3 islands from the Old Town. It is touristy, but an easy way to see all 3 together. I think Mljet makes a great day trip from Dubrovnik and it is a really beautiful island because it is mostly national park.

We took the boat tour to the three islands that Ray mentions; we picked up tickets right by the harbour. It was a pleasant day out with a fish lunch on the boat. There wasn't much time on each island but we were glad to be there as 3 nights / 3.5 days was too much just staying in Dubrovnik Old City.

If I take catamaran to Mljet, how do we get around Mljet?
