Day trip to Hallstatt
What is the best way to get to Hallstatt from Salzburg??
I saw the train ride takes about 2 1/2 hr..However, if you go by car you can reach in 45 mins...Is there a bus going to Hallstatt?? Is it really worth??? |
Hi P,
Yes, an overnight in Hallstatt is worth it. I'm not sure that 5 hr out and back just to see Hallstatt is. ((I)) |
I love Hallstatt. I am returning there in September. I have only gone by train and it does take 2 1/2 hours, then a real quick boat ride. I wish there was a bus, but I have never found one. It would be a long day trip from Salzburg, but it really is beautiful.

If you can rent a car, its a super-easy drive and you will pass some amazing scenery along the way. St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang, on the Wolfgansee, are wonderful and worthy of a stop on the way to Hallstatt.

I agree with tcreath. Love those 3 towns!
If you can, spend a night or two in one of the 3 towns. I spent 2 nights in Hallstatt (arrived mid-late afternoon on first day) and 2 nights in St. Wolfgang and travelled by boat to/from St. Gilgen. Also, toured the hunting lodge in Bad Ischl on my drive to St. Wolfgang. |
hi piya,
we were recently in the Salzkammergut and thinking of taking the train to Salzburg, even though we had a car, to avoid the parking problem. we were very surprised that a 30 minute drive was going to take about 2 hours. ditto the bus [yes there was one, but it took just as long as the train!] it must be something to do with the way the tracks are laid and teh bus timetables that go round everry timy village. I would suggest arriving late afternoon in Hallstatt, spending the night there, enjoying the sights the next day, then moving on again in the pm. a night there will let you enjoy the place without all the day-trippers. |
