Day trip to Germany from Strasbourg?

My 19-yr. old daughter and her friends (they are in Lyon for the summer for French language classes) are going to Strasbourg for a four-day weekend in a couple of weeks, and she asked me to see if there were any interesting places close-by in Germany (Black Forest area?) that would be worthwhile for a daytrip from their Strasbourg base. We took her to Trier and St. Goar last summer and she and loved it, and I think she is looking for a similar sort of place (she loves history AND beauty :-). Any suggestions?

Freiburg is a great town, nice cathedral (be sure to climb the tower) easily combined with a driving tour of the couthern Black Forest. On a clear day there are awesome views of the Alps from atop Belchen.

Thanks, Chris. I found a map and it looks like Baden Baden is also close. So now my question is, Baden Baden or Freiburg?

Freiburg would be better. More scenery on way there and back. Baden Baden is north edge of Black Forest.

I have been to Freiburg, not to Baden Baden but having done some research about Baden (we almost had in it our itinerary but then rerouted) Baden sounded really interesting. It has historic old upper crust homes, park, casino I believe and of couse the baths! So stuff to do if weather is good or bad. On the web it looked very quaint. I think Freiburg may be more historic with the church etc.

Check out some web sites to see what you think she may like.

So I'm hearing Freiburg is her best bet. So little time, so much to see...thanks, all!

Baden Baden would be pretty awesome for college aged kids - the spas are wonderful; also take a look at tribourg.

Baden Baden for college kids? Only if they want to see a bunch of old folks naked in a spa. Really Baden Baden is more of an upper crust town and I don't think it would be that interesting to college students.
Freiburg on the other hand would be perfect. Drive through Wolfach and you can visit a replica village with the thatched roofs, old buildings, etc...
Then head home via the autobahn.
A perfect day trip.

Freiburg is a university city, so your daughter and friends may be able to stay at the university and hang out with their German counterparts. It's a beautiful doable city. Recommend climbing the cathedral tower. In addition, there's a wonderful market around the cathedral daily where we found the best wurst in all of Germany.

If you go to www.freiburg.de you can get some information about Freiburg. There is a link there to send an email if you have questions.

We were thinking of taking the train from Strasbourg last year and I had sent an email for some general information. The lady who answered was very informative and welcoming.
