Day trip to Dublin for St Patricks Day

Hi all! We will be traveling to London as a couple next March for 6 days. I have lived there before so am extremely familar with navigating around the city. Upon further research I have found that we will be there during St Patrick's Day. I know there are events in London to celebrate as well, but I'm thinking to myself why not make it to Dublin? It would be my Significant other's dream come true. I know we are close enough and the flight will only take an hour or so, but would it be worth it do make a day trip out there? We can get there by 7:30 am and leave there around 8:30pm.

Neither of us have been to Dublin so any advice or suggestions would be appreciated! We are in London from March 13 and leave on the 19th. If there is any way to fit in Dublin into our itinerary, it would make my SO so happy!

I'll leave it to others, who are more experienced than I, to comment on Dublin as a day trip. I'll just say that if you decide to do this, don't forget to allow travel time to and from airports in both cities, to make sure you get where you want and need to go, and have a clear idea of times, before you book anything. (It would be a shame if you got to Dublin and discovered that the one event you were most interested in, you weren't able to do, because you had to get back to the airport for your return flight.)

If you've not already booked your plane tickets, have you considered splitting your trip? Fly into Dublin, travel to London, fly home from London, or the reverse, is what I mean.

Another idea would be to overnight in Dublin.

Alternately, maybe you'd prefer to spend your entire holiday in Ireland this trip?

I hope you're able to make something work for you.

Thank you for your input! We have already purchased tickets to and from London. I am considering doing an overnight stay in Dublin to make it easier.

It's probably too early to check flights - scheduling and pricing. But I would not be surprised if they were quite expensive because of, as we Irish would put it, the day that's in it.

In some ways, it's a disappointment. The parade in Dublin (late morning into afternoon) can be fun; the rest of the day is given over to excessive drinking.

Dublin as a day trip from London not a problem at all but as has been said flights will be expensive around St Patrick's day and you are not going to see Dublin at its best.

If you want to see an Irish parade then fly into Shannon and head for Limerick or Galway, if you want to see Dublin pick another day.

It's the same problem in relation to Limerick or Galway - an okay parade (Limerick) or a good one (Galway) followed by excessive drinking.

And a likelihood of the flights being expensive in relation to other dates.

That is dissapointing to hear! Not much different than here (US) minus the parade...just all the drinking!

The flights at this time are relativly inexpensive, so I better decide and book soon!

Thank you for the suggestions on the other cities. I will look into those!
